Harbour Dredge Monitoring

A UK Port Authority proposed to undertake capital dredging to increase the navigable depth within their harbour. As a result of sediment transport modelling undertaken as part of the environmental impact assessment, it was recommended that the Port Authority undertake inshore dredge area monitoring and offshore dredge material disposal monitoring to confirm the modelling predictions.

Partrac installed a custom designed seabed monitoring rig to record current speed and direction, wave height, suspended sediment concentration and changes (mm scale) in bed elevation. The monitoring rig was deployed at multiple locations in the harbour during the dredge operations, over a period of 5 months. The data was downloaded, processed and analysed every two weeks.

The client was able to clearly see the effect of the dredge operation on sensitive locations within the harbour and was thus able to make management decisions regarding the sediment management of the dredge operations. This cost-efficient monitoring solution not only provided the client with confidence in the modelling predictions but also provided physical data to present to stakeholders and other third parties, demonstrating a commitment to the environmental management of the harbour area.
