Particle and Sediment Tracing

Partrac provide expertise in particle tracing. We use a range of novel particle analogues (tracers) encoded with our 'Dual Signature Tag' (DST). These are used in conjunction with traditional field measurement techniques to determine the pathways and rates of particle transport through the environment.

Uniquely labelled tracer particles are introduced into the study area e.g. on land, in rivers, estuaries or the sea and their spatial distribution is monitored through time. This technique is a powerful complementary tool for visualising the transport pathways of a variety of particles, ranging from contaminated sediments to urban particulates and dredge spoil material.

Typical applications include

  • Sediment/contaminant transport monitoring
  • Erosion/deposition monitoring
  • Dredge disposal impact assessment
  • Particle transport model calibration and validation
  • Sediment cap integrity studies
  • Bioturbation investigations
  • Bedload transport quantification
  • Longshore sediment transport rate derivation
  • Swash zone sediment transport assessment
  • Urban sediment tracing
  • Larvae transport (using neutrally buoyant tracers)

Partrac tracer particles are certified solvent-free, do not contain polymers, are non-toxic, and our manufacturing facility is accredited with the ISO9001 quality system. A wide range of tracer particles are available and we can custom-design tracers for specific purposes and projects.
